When it comes to your dog, what's in a name?

Whether you dubbed your pooch Princess or Killer, the name really does say a lot about your little canine friend.

The Banfield Pet Hospital, the world’s largest veterinary practice, compiled a list of the most popular dog names in 2011, based on names taken from its patient database from the more than 780 locations across the United States.

The most popular dog names? Bella, Bailey, Max, Lucy and Molly, respectively.  Buddy, Daisy, Maggie, Charlie and Sophie rounded out the top 10.

What's your dog's name? Take our poll, and let us know. If your pup's name isn't on this list, add it in in the comments. And while you are here - upload a photo of your pet. There's nothing cuter than pet pictures.

Oh, and if you're a cat person, you'll get yours. The most popular cat names are coming up tomorrow on Patch.

My daughter got a pound dog when she was in college. The dog was a pitbull mix, so my daughter named her Flower, maybe to counter pitbulls' bad reputation. She is the sweetest dog.

We have a Corgi/Jack Russell mix and she was given to us by a family friend whose dog had nine puppies. They named her Lucy and we just kept the name but she also gets called LuLu, Lu, LuLee, Lucifer (when she's naughty), etc. We often use the whole, "Oh, Luucy, I'm hoome!" line. It never gets old.

We rescued a beagle named Jasmine. My husband said that name had to go. So now she's Nickie. I've read several dog training books that recommend that dog names have lots of vowels in them, that's what dogs pick up on plus the inflection of our voices.

It's a rawhide bone but I thought the same thing when I took the picture. Only the cat smokes in our house.

We have a chocolate Lab named Tess. I call her Tess Potato because she's such a couch potato.

My Shih Tzu came from a family whose kids insisted I keep the name of the puppy I chose. It was a close call between Cow & Spiderman... I went with Cow. He was the biggest puppy of the bunch and imagine this -- spotted black & white like a holstein. Surprisingly, 8 years later, he is still The Cow. We also have a Golden Lab named Windsor -- and yes, like the whiskey.

I have 2 beautiful white toy poodles. The first one is named Miss Maggie Mae, but I call her Maggie. The second one is Izzy-Bella. She is named after my granddaughter in MN. She answers to Izzy. They are my babies.
