Veterinarian Cares for Military Dogs in Afghanistan and Pampered Pets in Cedar Falls Alike: Business Spotlight

Dr. Tammy Stevenson's veterinary experience doesn't end in the Cedar Valley.

Stevenson, 38, has also cared for military working dogs while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, first as a lieutenant and then as a captain in the U.S. Army Reserves.

She cared for dogs whose job it was to help with explosive detection and contractor dogs that assisted with mine clearing. She also served on humanitarian missions in Afghanistan - providing primary veterinary care such as vaccinations and de-worming, as well as going on farm visits.

"It was a great experience; I would not trade it for anything," she said. "It got me to places in this world I never would have gone on my own."

Now back in Cedar Falls, she is the owner of Advanced Pet Care Clinic. But she said the lessons she learned in the Army stick with her.

"You take for granted the way that you live until you go to these places where they walk a mile or two miles to get clean water for the day," she said. "It gets you out of your comfort zone. It was one of the better things I've ever done in my life."
