It was another close race, but in the end Gravy's Diner pulled through with the most votes for the title of Cedar Falls Patch Readers' Choice 2012: The Best Place for Breakfast. So congratulations to Gravy's - may their hash browns ever be crispy, may their eggs ever be delicious. Cedar Falls readers certainly seem to already view them that way. State Street has long seemed to be the neglected cousin in the Main Street neighborhood's development. That is set to change if the plans from a developer move forward.
A major development project is planned for downtown State Street in Cedar Falls, the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier has reported. The Courier writes: Mark Kittrell and Jean Fischer, of Eagle View Partners, plan to jump-start both a four-block section of State Street and the site of the former Broom Factory restaurant at First and Main streets. They expect to partner with others on mostly residential development, but also envision a hotel, public spaces and some limited commercial space. Kittrell and Fischer presented their plan to a committee of the Planning and Zoning Commission Wednesday. They told the committee they hope to bring 350 to 400 residents downtown. The Western Home Communities are also planning a large expansion on State …
Unemployment and underemployment rates are especially high among recent college graduates.
By Ben Moore IowaWatch.org "Exhaustive, expensive, and occasionally humiliating" is how Hannah Kane, 22, described job hunting after graduating from the University of Iowa in May 2011 with a bachelor's degree in cinema. "Interviewing at Hy-Vee between high school kids got old fast," Kane said. "It was a good lesson in humility." Living in Iowa City, Kane eventually was hired by Best Buy in Coralville before leaving for jobs at both the Iowa City Public Library and UI Main Library until she can find a job more suited to her field of study. About 20 percent of college graduates wind up in jobs they could have had without setting foot in college, according to a 2009 analysis by Andrew M. Sum, a Northeastern University economist. Waiting …

The plant had originally closed temporarily in response to the "pink slime" controversy.
Beef Products Inc. officials announced it will shutdown processing plants in three states, including one in Waterloo, Iowa, due to the recent “pink slime” controversy, according to an article by the Gazette. About 650 jobs will be lost in a number of cities when the plants close on May 25. "Pink slime," or what the company calls "lean, finely textured beef," is bits of beef that are heated and treated with a small amount of ammonia. "We will continue communicating the benefits of BPI's lean beef, but that process is much more difficult than (countering) the campaign to spread misinformation that brought us to this point," Rich Jochum, a company spokesperson, said in a statement. "While we had hoped to be able to resume operation at those …
Jordan Ramos filed a complaint after she said she was insulted about her weight and banned from dancing on a dance platform with friends.
You've probably heard about the young woman named Jordan Ramos, who says she was banned from dancing on a platform at the Union Bar in Iowa City after bouncers told her she was not pretty enough to dance there and "obviously pregnant." The bar apologized, the city of Iowa City forced the Union to dismantle the platform for safety reasons and just this past weekend there was this colorful protest. There's two good questions from this case, but only room for one poll, although plenty of room in the comment section to discuss both.
