Fire Destroys Garage, Car in Cedar Falls

Cedar Falls Fire Chief John Schilling said the fire, which appeared to be accidental, was extinguished quickly.

A weekend fire destroyed a car and garage in Cedar Falls Sunday.

Cedar Falls Fire Chief John Schilling said the fire, which appeared to be accidental, was extinguished quickly.

The fire, at 2121 Olive St., was reported at 2:26 p.m. It caused some radiant heat damage to the nearby house, Schilling said. Resident Thomas Mason, the only person home at the time, received burns to his hands and was treated by paramedics and transported to an area hospital.

A grill next to the garage where Mason cooked his lunch earlier that day was being investigated as a potential source for the blaze.

Schilling said the estimated property damage was $19,500.
