'Voter ID: Voter Fraud or Voter Suppression?' Topic of UNI Panel Discussion

Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz will be on the panel, which will discuss the current hot topic of voter ID laws.

Approximately 38 states have passed or proposed laws related to voter registration and voting.

The University of Northern Iowa will host a panel to discuss these laws from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 25, in Lang Hall Auditorium. The event, "Voter ID: Voter Fraud or Voter Suppression?" is free and open to the public.

Panelists are Jordan Bancroft-Smithe, president, UNI Northern Iowa Student Government; Michael Blackwell, Executive Board, NAACP, and director of UNI's Center for Multicultural Education; Donna Hoffman, chair, UNI Department of Political Science; John W. Johnson, professor of history at UNI; Chris Martin, chair, Department of Communication Studies at UNI; and Matt Schultz, Iowa secretary of state. Panel moderator is Pat Harper, board member, League of Women Voters, and former Iowa representative and senator.

Panelists will cover types of laws passed and proposed in various states, arguments for and against voter ID and registration laws, forms of ID accepted, the incidence of voter fraud, and changes recommended to increase Iowa voter registration and voting accountability.
