A former University of Northern Iowa employee pleaded guilty to first-degree theft Monday in connection to thousands of dollars stolen from the UNI ticket office in 2010. John David Gogola, 44, was the assistant director of UNItix when $18,000 reportedly disappeared from the ticketing system. Gogola was arrested and charged with the theft in December 2011. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reported on Gogola's hearing: Assistant County Attorney Linda Fangman indicated the state will be seeking a suspended sentence with probation, and the defense will ask for a deferred judgment that would take the conviction off Gogola’s record if he successfully completes his probation. The sentence was delivered today in the trial of Paris Anding, who was convicted of second degree manslaughter in the death of Marcellus Andrews.
Multiple news outlets are reporting that Paris Anding, who was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the 2011 beating death of Waterloo teen Marcellus Andrews, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. The case garnered national attention after it was reported Andrews was allegedly taunted by anti-gay slurs during the attack. His family said Andrews, 19, was not gay, and the case focused on a series of confrontations between Andings' family and Andrew's friends, ending with the deadly beating. Andrews was reportedly struck repeatedly in the back of the head with a baseball bat. The 10-year sentence is the mandatory requirement for voluntary manslaughter in Iowa. A woman whom Cedar Falls police said walked away twice with hundreds of dollars of stolen merchandise from Von Maur was arrested after an alleged third theft from the Cedar Falls store on Thursday. Debra Ann Auringer, 57, female, of Floyd, was arrested at 12:46 p.m. May 17 at Von Maur and charged with three counts third degree theft and one count of criminal trespass. She was allegedly caught stealing $759 worth of merchandise from the store on Thursday. She had allegedly been seen stealing more than $300 worth of merchandise from Von Maur on two separate occasions in the past, but police were never able to arrest her for those incidents. May 17: The name of a driver who was airlifted to Iowa City after a single-vehicle crash in Cedar Falls Tuesday has been released. Samuel Genolous, 68, of Cedar Falls, was airlifted to University Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City after his car went off the road, traveled through a ditch and struck a tree. Cedar Falls Police said Genolous's injuries are life-threatening and he remained hospitalized. Previous reporting from May 16: A single-vehicle crash on northbound Highway 218 in Cedar Falls sent the driver to University Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City Tuesday night. Cedar Falls police have arrested a Waterloo man and charged him with the theft of artifacts valued at $13,100 from the Cedar Falls Historical Society, 308 W. Third St. On April 25, the Historical Society reported the theft of the artifacts, which included antique firearms, bayonets and clothes from the World War I and World War II eras. Police said a former employee was suspected of being involved in the theft after co-workers allegedly observed him mishandling property at the museum. During the subsequent investigation, police said they learned the employee, David Lynn Arnold, 58, of Waterloo, had allegedly been keeping the stolen items in a Waterloo home, unbeknownst to the homeowners. Cedar Falls police charged three men with disorderly conduct and public intoxication after a weekend fight that allegedly centered around a pilfered piece of pizza. Police said officers on a routine patrol early Sunday morning witnessed an altercation outside Tony's LaPizzeria, 407 Main Street. When they separated the fighting individuals, there was allegedly a strong odor of alcohol coming from Jamie Ray Clasen, 32, of Iowa City. Police said Clasen admitted to drinking 12 beers. He and Alexander Michael Six, 30, of Waterloo, were allegedly fighting with Marshall Lee Karr, 19, of Traer. Police said the subject of the altercation was a piece of pizza.
