A massive search is underway for Kathlynn Shepard, 15, in Webster County, after authorities said she and another girl were abducted Monday.
As a search for an abducted Iowa girls stretches into its third day, authorities said they are looking for any connection to the still-unsolved murder and kidnapping cases of Lyric Cook-Morrissey and Elizabeth Collins of Evansdale. Lyric, 10, and her cousin Elizabeth, 8, went missing last July. Their bodies were discovered in the Seven Bridges Wilderness Area of Bremer County in December, and the hunt for their killer is ongoing. Authorities said Michael J. Klunder, 42, the suspect in Monday's abduction of Kathlynn Shepard, 15, and another girl in Webster County, was found dead of self-inflicted wounds Monday night at a rural property northeast of Dayton. A massive search is underway for Kathlynn Shepard, 15, in Webster County after authorities said she and another girl were abducted Monday. Authorities said a suspect, Michael J. Klunder, 42, was found dead Monday night at a rural property northeast of Dayton. He was on the Iowa Sex Offender Registry. Authorities said they suspect he offered Shepard and a 12-year-old girl a ride in his red Toyota Tundra pickup as they got off a school bus just before 4 p.m. Monday. Investigators said the 12-year-old was able to escape and ran to a nearby home after the girls were taken to an agricultural facility southeast of Dayton. Shepard, however, remains missing. A man who was shot while officers said he was threatening police with a knife has been identified.
The man who was shot by a Waterloo police officer this week had recently moved from Minnesota to Cedar Falls, the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations said late Friday. DCI officials identified the man as Richard Anderson, 39. Waterloo Police said he had been threatening officers with a knife when he was shot May 15 just after 1 a.m. near East Fourth Street and Sycamore Street in Waterloo. Anderson was first taken to Allen Hospital in Waterloo before being transferred to University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City. He has remained at the hospital and has continued to receive treatment for his injuries, the DCI said today. The Black Hawk County Sheriff's office said the bus was engulfed in flames Thursday night on Interstate 380.
A 50-passenger bus owned by Cedar Falls company Dolly's Party Bus wasn't carrying anyone except the driver when it was engulfed in flames on the interstate Thursday night. The driver was able to get to safety without injury after the bus caught fire around 6:30 p.m. It was soon engulfed in flames on the shoulder of southbound I-380, south of the I-380/Highway 20 interchange. Black Hawk County Sheriff's deputies said after speaking with the driver, it is believed the fire started in the rear of the bus and may have been caused by the air conditioning system.
