Cedar Falls Principal Powers, Vying for Superintendent Job, Says He's Ready to Lead

Four candidates are interviewing for the position of Cedar Falls superintendent this week.

Update 7:55 p.m.: Speaking at a public reception Thursday night, Cedar Falls High School Principal Rich Powers said he is ready to lead. Powers, the final candidate for the Cedar Falls superintendent position, is the only finalist without superintendency experience. But he said he thinks his work at Cedar Falls High, managing nearly 100 certified staff members and multiple administrators - there are three associate principals under him at the high school - has shown he can lead. "I think a great leader is a great leader," he said. "There’s no doubt in my mind I’m ready to lead in our community. I have a great passion for it. Update: Cedar Falls is Chance to Learn and Listen, Says Superintendent Candidate Van Soelen

Four candidates are interviewing for the position of Cedar Falls superintendent this week.

Updated 10:57 p.m.: Cedar Falls superintendent candidate Thomas Van Soelen isn't looking for just any job. "At one point, I counted up all the superintendent openings in the United States and there were 125," he said. "I didn't apply for all of those. I applied for this one." He said wants a job where he can continue learning and thinking and building relationships. He sees that in Cedar Falls, he told community members at a public reception Tuesday. "I'm looking for a place that I can do intellectual work, that I can really be learning and developing with a community," he said. Update 8:57 p.m.: Being open and collaborative is key to successful leadership, said Charles City and Riceville Superintendent Andy Pattee, who spoke with community members Monday as a finalist for the Cedar Falls superintendent position. "You have to spend time in the course of the first month or two months talking with people," he said. Pattee was also a finalist for superintendent a year ago, when the district hired Mike Wells. The Cedar Falls School Board has announced the four candidates who will interview for the position of Cedar Falls superintendent.

Update: Suspicious Vehicle Found After Man Reported Approaching Young Girl

Police said that on Thursday just after 8 a.m., they received a report of a suspicious man near a school bus stop talking with the girl.

Update 2:09 p.m.: Waterloo Police have located a vehicle they were seeking after a man was reported talking to a young girl at a school bus stop this morning. The car, with Oklahoma license plates, was later seen near Lowell Elementary School in Waterloo, police said. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Couriers report the black Chevrolet Trailblazer was found parked behind a home, and officers have taken someone to the police station for an interview. Price Lab Building Demolition Set to Begin

Price Lab closed its doors last June. The school served as a teaching lab for college students and a K-12 school for about 350 kids who have been dispersed to local school districts.

The building that once housed Malcolm Price Laboratory School is set for demolition, possibly beginning this week. Windows have already been removed from the building and University of Northern Iowa spokesperson Stacey Christensen said most of the building will be razed. The Nielsson Field House and west wing will remain standing. The field house will be available for public rental, with some summer camps already scheduled there this year, Christensen said. That wing will remain in use by UNI's Child Development Center. Price Lab closed its doors last June.
