WATCH: Push-Up Brawlers Kicking Off Second Season With a Bang and A Few Bruises

By day, they are Cedar Falls teachers, investor specialists, stay-at-home moms and grocery store managers. By night, they are the Push-Up Brawlers, the Cedar Valley's own roller derby divas.

By day they are investor specialists, teachers, moms and grocery store managers. By night, the fierce ladies of the Cedar Valley Push-Up Brawlers are Cedar Falls’ representatives in the world of roller derby. The team just kicked off their second season, with bouts – matches – planned throughout the summer at McElroy Stadium and around that state. (See their schedule and ticket information here.) Roller derby, which had its original popularity in the 1970s, has seen a resurgence of popularity in recent years. Jessica Pruitt, Roots Market manager, helped start the team with Morgan Combs, a full-time mom from Waverly. “None of us had ever seen roller derby or played it. So a lot of the first summer was spent learning,” Combs said. Combs said…

Obama Visiting (Again), Tragic Fall During VEISHEA Week, Olympic Wrestling Trials and Shooting at Student Housing: Pick of the Iowa Patches

A quick guide to top stories you may have missed this past week from across Iowa Patch towns.

The Patch community includes nine sites in Iowa. Here are some of what was shared on our Iowa Patches over the past week. The sitting president doesn't often make his way to Iowa, but we guess with campaign season heating up we should get used to it. President Barack Obama will be visiting University of Iowa campus in Iowa City on Wednesday to talk student loan debt, and First Lady Michelle Obama has two stops planned in Des Moines on Tuesday.  Iowa City is also hosting Olympic Wrestling Trials this weekend. Fans from across the state and nation are pouring in. Former Iowa star Brent Metcalf and former Iowa State standout Jake Varner are among some of the ones to watch, according to longtime wrestling writer Dan McCool. In Ankeny, city …

Reporter Dan McCool, who has covered wrestling for nearly 30 years, give fans his picks for who to watch at the Olympic Trials in Iowa City this weekend. And you can meet McCool at the Trials' Fan Fest, where he's selling copies of his book," Reach for th

By DAN McCOOL Iowa City likes to brag of its status among the elite communities in regards to being the hottest of wrestling’s hotbeds. This weekend, it’s THE place to be for anyone with a dream of wrestling — in either freestyle or Greco-Roman — at the 2012 Olympics in London. The hometown University of Iowa wrestling team has won 23 of the 38 NCAA Division I team championships contested since 1975. The closest to that is Oklahoma State with seven. However, college supremacy is not the nonpareil this weekend. Those big-dream wrestlers — and a record number of fans that could total 15,000 — come to Carver-Hawkeye Arena Saturday and Sunday for the Final Trials, a once-per-quadrennium competition. Sessions are scheduled for 9 a.m. and 6 p.m…

Wisco, Ryan Get Black Eye, Uthoff Gets to Transfer; Northern Iowa on His List

Could the 6-foot-8 former Cedar Rapids Jefferson star Jarrod Uthoff be coming to play basketball for the Iowa Hawkeyes in Iowa City or Iowa State Cyclones in Ames after his controversial exit from Wisconsin?

Many a game Iowa high school hoops fans were probably cursing under their breath as former Cedar Rapids Jefferson star Jarrod Uthoff scored bucket after bucket on their team. He then spurned his home state, and heavy pursuit by the Iowa Hawkeyes, to become a Wisconsin Badger in college. He played one year and now is on the verge of transferring ... after some dramatics. I'm guessing most fans will forgive and forget if he returns to Iowa to continue his college ball career. Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan gave a lengthy list of schools he couldn't transfer to including all schools in the Big Ten and Iowa State, among many more. But, it appears Uthoff gets the last laugh after Ryan and Wisconsin got beat up on sports radio and the Twitterverse. …

Take a Look at the New Cy-Hawk Trophy Concepts and then Vote

Want to see what trophy the Hawkeyes and Cyclones could be vying for in the future? Read on.

Remember last fall when a new Iowa versus Iowa State (Cy-Hawk Series) trophy caused a minor Iowa Internet meltdown due to its appearance? Well, there are new trophies up for consideration now taken from fan submissions, and you have a chance to vote on them here. This new Cy-Hawk Trophy will be the one that will be played for when the Iowa State Cyclones take on the University of Iowa Hawkeyes for their annual football rivalry this fall. And because the game is in Iowa City this year, that's where the trophy will stay. (Let the trashtalk begin!) Here's the voting timeline: April 14, 2012     Voting Begins at 12:01 a.m. April 30, 2012     Voting Ends at 11:59 p.m. May 1, 2012     Winning Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk series football trophy design …

These designs are just barely better than the one that was rejected. At the risk of bias, and I say this as a U. of I. grad, give the design students at ISU a chance to enter the competition.   more ›

Important RAGBRAI Deadline Coming Sunday

You won't want to miss an important RAGBRAI deadline coming on Sunday.

RAGBRAI 40 is right around the corner, or maybe it just feels that way. I am planning to ride the route again this year (my 10th time going). It isn't until July 22-28, but there's lots happening right now that every RAGBRAI rider, myself included, should be doing to get ready. Patch is participating in RAGBRAI XL and covering it all week. We are looking for riders in all of our Iowa Patch towns, who are interested in sharing your pictures, your stories and your experiences. Contact me, or your local editor if you are interested.  In case you missed it, RAGBRAI XL is 471 miles long and crosses the state from Sioux Center to Clinton. Here is a link to the full route. The Counting Crows (think 1990s pop, Mr. Jones and Round Here were a …

Supportive Bootcamp: Extreme Fitness Centers Growing in Popularity in Cedar Falls

Gyms that focus on intensive workout sessions are growing in popularity in Cedar Falls.

Lauri Lumm-Usher lost more than 30 percent of her lung capacity to cancer seven years ago, but that doesn't stop her from keeping fit. Really, really fit. Lumm-Usher, 38, co-owns Farrell's eXtreme Body Shaping with her husband Chris Usher. Together they run a gym that does just what it's name implies - it builds muscles, sheds pounds and shapes bodies during an intensive 10-week workout program. Farrell's is just one of a number of such intensive workout centers that have sprung up in Cedar Falls within the last five years. Besides Farrell's, which opened in May 2009, there is Next Level Extreme Fitness , which opened in Jan. 2011, and Roc Fit, which has been in Waterloo for years but recently opened a Cedar Falls location. Another …

I've participated in both of the above mentioned programs, and they are both excellent! The advantage of going to fitness classes for me is that I am much more likely to keep going and work harder when I'm in a group. I tend not to push myself as much when I'm working out on my own. It's also really encouraging to see everyone else working out at such intense levels, and truthfully I don't want …   more ›

ENCORE: UNI Faculty Votes No Confidence in Allen, Gibson

A specially called meeting of the University of Northern Iowa faculty issued the vote of no confidence in the wake of controversial budget cuts including the proposed closure of Price Lab School.

The University of Northern Iowa faculty has issued a vote of no confidence in UNI President Ben Allen and Provost Gloria Gibson. Just over 250 faculty members, as well as dozens of students and community members, gathered in the great hall of the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center Friday in a meeting unprecedented in the history of the University of Northern Iowa. On the motion for no confidence in Allen, 197 voted yes, 53 voted no and four abstained. On the motion for no confidence in Gibson, 172 voted yes, 69 voted no and nine abstained, with one spoiled ballot. Faculty chair James Jurgensen read the results, which were taken by secret paper ballot. The full text of the vote has been attached to this article as a PDF. The faculty…
