Perry Joins Santorum and Huckabee at Saturday's Family Leadership Summit

The Family Leadership Summit will be held at Point of Grace Church Saturday with guest speakers Govs. Rick Perry and Mike Huckabee and former Sen. Rick Santorum in attendance.

A third former Republican presidential candidate was announced today adding to the lineup of speakers at the Family Leadership Summit scheduled for Saturday at Waukee's Point of Grace Church. Texas Gov. Rick Perry was just added to the roster that already includes Sen. Rick Santorum and Gov. Mike Huckabee -- both winners of the Iowa caucuses. The three conservative leaders will join New York Times best-selling author Joel C. Rosenberg, Dr. Laurence White, Sen. Chuck Grassley, and Congressman Steve King at the podium. In a news release today, Bob Vander Plaats, President & CEO of The Family Leader said, “We are glad to welcome Governor Rick Perry back to Iowa. We encourage all fiscal and social conservatives to come out for The Summit to …

Hundreds Gather in Des Moines Metro to Hear Rick Santorum Thank Iowa Voters

Some audience members agree that Santorum would make a strong vice-presidential candidate.

While speaking in Windsor Heights Wednesday night, Rick Santorum admitted to having “Iowa withdrawals.” “I haven’t been back (in Iowa) since the day after the caucus,” Santorum said. “...I needed to get back to a Pizza Ranch.” The former Republican presidential candidate made hundreds of stops across Iowa in the months leading up to January caucuses, which he won. This past week, he hopped across the state again, this time to thank his supporters for the (belated) win he achieved in the caucuses. Earlier Wednesday, he spoke in Cedar Falls with state Rep. Walt Rogers. Around 200 people gathered in Colby Park Wednesday night, including a pair of enthusiastic teens from Leon, IA. Lydia Buckingham and her cousin, Kaleb Ogier, both 15, said …

Santorum in Iowa Says Obama Wants to Return to Days of Royalty

The one-time Republican presidential candidate returned to the state and appeared with Black Hawk County Republican candidates for the Iowa House and Senate.

Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, back in Iowa and campaigning on behalf of local Republicans Wednesday, said President Barack Obama wants to return to the days of royal rule. "Obama believes America is a fundamentally flawed country that needs to be changed," he told the group of about 40 Black Hawk County Republicans. "If you had any doubts that this president wants to return to the days of King George III, look at the last couple of weeks. He wants to be slapping down the Constitution and the courts and ruling from on high." He, and some of the candidates for the Iowa House and Senate that he appeared with, struck an urgent, at times bordering on apocalyptic, tone as they called on supporters to get out and campaign with vigor …

Santorum to Campaign For Walt Rogers in Cedar Falls, Ben Lange in Dubuque

The one-time presidential candidate is making several July stops in Iowa.

The Republican who all but made Iowa his home during the Caucus campaign season is returning this month, and he'll be appearing with Walt Rogers and Ben Lange, both currently on the campaign trail. On July 11, Santorum, who won the Iowa Republican caucus, will be the special guest at a breakfast reception for Rogers, the Republican state representative for Cedar Falls. Rogers, the incumbent, is being challenged by Democrat Bob Greenwood. The breakfast is at 7:30 a.m. at New Aldaya Lifescapes, 7511 University Ave. On July 10, Santorum will appear at a fundraiser for Republican First District Congressional candidate Ben Lange. Lange, whom Santorum recently endorsed, is challenging incumbent Democrat Bruce Braley. The event will be at 6:30 p…

Rick Santorum Making July 'Thank You' Stops in Iowa City and Windsor Heights, Will Speak on Stem Cells in Coralville

Santorum, along with Bob Vander Plaats, plan to speak on ethical stem cell research at an Oakdale Research Park location in Coralville. He will also have a "thank you" dinner in Iowa City the day before.

Rick Santorum is making yet another visit to Iowa. The former Pennsylvania senator bowed out of the Republican presidential race after narrowly losing, then later narrowly winning in Iowa. Santorum has promised to stay active in politics, however, even campaigning for several Republicans in Iowa, including first district candidate Ben Lange. Santorum's rise to prominence in Iowa came in no small part to his grass roots support after 99-county tour of the state. On July 10, Santorum will be in Iowa City to have a "thank you" lunch at Bella Scala, with a event at Windsor Heights in the Des Moines area on July 11. Santorum will also be in Coralville on July 11 to speak on stem cell research according to the Gazette: The former Pennsylvania …

Santorum Endorses ‘Tireless Campaigner’ Ben Lange

Former Pennsylvania Senator and GOP presidential hopeful Rick Santorum has endorsed Iowa’s First Congressional District Republican candidate, Ben Lange.

Former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum, who won the Iowa Caucus, has thrown his support behind First District Congressional candidate Ben Lange. Lange, a lawyer from Independence, nearly upset Democratic incumbent Bruce Braley, in the previous election season, and, the jury is still out on whether Braley or Lange benefits more from the newly redrawn district lines. "He will be a tremendous representative for the people of Iowa in the halls of Congress, and I look forward to working with Ben’s campaign to help elect him as the next congressman for northeast Iowa," said Santorum in a news release, according to the Des Moines Register. The message was released under a non-profit Santorum started shortly after bowing out of the…

Branstad In for Romney, Santorum Out of Race, Iowa Political Insiders Weigh In

With Gov. Terry Branstad's endorsement and Rick Santorum out, Republicans in the swing state of Iowa embrace Romney and turn their attention to general election.

Did Iowa's Gov. Terry Branstad get a tip, does he have more clout than people realize, or does he just have really, really good timing? Iowa's political insiders say it was coincidence that the Republican governor ended his silence and endorsed Mitt Romney as the GOP choice for president moments before news broke that Romney's biggest challenger, Rick Santorum, was suspending his campaign on Tuesday. "It's serendipity," said Eric Woolson, an Iowa GOP staple who was a campaign leader for former candidate Michele Bachmann. "For Gov. Branstad, it's terrific he came forward when he did -- although Santorum then stepped on Gov. Branstad's story -- so that Branstad was in front when he declared his support for Romney while it was a contested …

Iowa Patch Poll: Should Santorum Concede?

We're the state that brought Santorum's campaign to life. But, after a loss in Illinois last week and a larger imbalance in the delegate count, are the campaigns for Santorum, and the rest of the not-Romneys, for practical purposes dead?

The very fact that the 2012 race for the Republican presidential nominee has always been between Mitt Romney and a revolving door of not-Romneys shows the power behind the former Massachusetts governor's campaign. Rick Santorum is the foremost not-Romney, and we get to claim some credit for that. It was the Iowa Caucus that gave his nearly dead campaign a vital boost of power that he still seems to be riding. But, has the former Pennsylvania senator taken the post-Iowa Caucus momentum as far as it will go? It's true that many stories are touting Santorum's Saturday Louisiana primary victory as proof that the race is still on, but the state only added 10 delegates to his total. Other stories point out that Santorum's victory will come from …

I agree that this is an interesting Republican race because it seems like two different parts of the Republican party negotiating with each other to see what direction they want the country taken in. Should make for an interesting convention for the party.   more ›

Iowa GOP Leaders to Examine, Improve Caucus Process

The state GOP chairman announced Monday party leaders will look at what went right — and wrong — on caucus night. The party was heavily criticized in January when votes were not counted and it took two weeks to declare Rick Santorum the state's winner.

Iowa Republicans have begun work to examine what went right on caucus night and what went wrong in the process, party officials announced in a news release Monday. “The purpose of the committee is to conduct a full audit and review of the Republican Caucus,” said Bill Schickel, state party co-chairman, who will lead the overview. “We’re going to review what went right and what went wrong. We will fix what went wrong and promote what went right.”  The party received heavy criticism from Iowa voters and from national presidential campaigns and the media for the delay in declaring a winner of the Jan. 3 caucuses. And then the canvas of votes changed the winner from former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney to former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick …

I dislike the idea of using a secret ballot system for any caucus. To eliminate any potential for fraud, simply use a posted section and stand system. Section off the voting area with name of candidate and stand in that section for your vote. Then count off in your section to determine the vote. This system allows for each group to talk to others or undecideds to gain support. This system is …   more ›

Remember When Iowa Was Too Crazy to Matter?

The GOP presidential nominees now include only the top four finishers in the Iowa caucuses.

Iowans must be getting used to it now: The griping that comes with the state's presidential caucuses, the griping that says placing so much importance on the votes of so few people skews the nominating process and lets "the crazies" take over the party. Worse than that are the grumblings that Iowa's caucuses are irrelevant. Well, guess what Rest of the World: The Iowa caucuses matter, and "the crazies" here got it right. How relevant are Iowa's caucuses? Is the conservative Christian movement in the Republican Party to stay? Tell us in comments. The proof is in the remaining GOP field. It's down to four candidates – the four top finishers in January's Iowa vote. That would be Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and, yes, still, Ron …
