Here's the agenda for Monday's Cedar Falls City Council meeting.
The third and final reading of an ordinance to expand the list of areas where pets are not allowed at Sturgis Falls is on the agenda for the Cedar Falls City Council tonight. Since 1991, an ordinance has been in place prohibiting dogs from the popular Sturgis Falls Celebration in Cedar Falls. A newly proposed ordinance amendment from Sturgis Falls Celebration and the Cedar Basin Jazz Festival would expand the locations which animals are prohibited from, according to Jay Stoddard, president of the Sturgis Falls Celebration. The expansion will include more event locations, the parade and the streets. The ordinance has already passed its first two readings. Cedar Falls officials are considering banning dogs from Sturgis Falls this year.
Officials are considering banning dogs from the annual Sturgis Falls celebration, at the organizers request. Cedar Falls City Council will vote on the matter at its next meeting. There's some disagreement as illustrated by a split vote on the first reading. Sturgis Falls, which this year is from June 27 to 30, stretches across many parts of downtown, and the ban would include places like parks and streets, according to the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier. Officials say it's an issue of public safety with such large crowds and the unpredictability of dogs, although there's been no known bites or attacks. A couple hundred cyclists showed up early Saturday for the 27th annual Tour De Sturgis Falls Ride.
The Cedar Valley Cyclists put on the 27th annual Tour De Sturgis Falls Ride this morning. About 200 people came out for the ride, which left from Big Woods Lake and had a short loop to Janesville and a longer ride out to Shell Rock. Attached are pictures from today. New to Sturgis Falls this year is the Gateway Park Market, just across the Cedar River from downtown. Patch will be here all day Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We've got a lot of Patch gear to give away, and we want to meet you, our readers, in person. So stop by and say hello! The market will feature a large number of vendors selling family friendly items, from sunglasses to Minnesota emu products, (whatever those may be). There will also be informational tables like Patch's. If shopping and free swag don't entice you, the park will also host a chain saw wood carving demonstration, and Monster Energy Drink will be bringing their BMX bicycle stunt team to Gateway Market on Saturday.
