Gay Marriage Advocates Plan Cedar Falls Rally for DOMA/Prop 8 Supreme Court Rulings

Gay marriage advocates are planning a rally in response to the Supreme Court's rulings on the Defense of Marriage Act and Proposition 8.

The advocates say they expect the Supreme Court's decision before the end of June and will rally on that day at 5:30 p.m. on the corner of Main St. and University Ave. in Cedar Falls.

"This rally will either be a celebration of expanded rights for same-sex couples or a protest of an unfavorable decision," organizers from Americans for Democratic Action said in a news release. "Either way, these activists say they’ll be ready to respond."

Members of Americans for Democratic Action, Working Families Win, One Iowa, UNI Proud and Sissy’s Sircus are planning the rally.

Prop 8 is the 2008 initiative that banned same-sex marriage in California, and the federal Defense of Marriage Act bars gay and lesbian married couples from receiving the same federal benefits as opposite-sex spouses, according to SFGate.com.
