Flood Recovery: Health and Wellness Blog

From flooded yards to water in the basement, many of us have experienced some form of flooding recently. Mother Nature does a good job of drying outdoors, and we get to do the rest. Did you know that what we use to clean inside can harm us as much as the bacteria in some of those waters or the mold that may grow?

Many of us learned to turn to bleach to kill germs. According to the EPA, bleach is a pesticide that is irritating to your skin and can cause serious damage to your eyes, even blindness. The National Institute of Health notes that harmful side effects may also include coughing (from the fumes), gagging sensation, chest pain, slow heartbeat, burns, vomiting, and several others. . . . When a clogged gutter left us with several inches of water in our unfinished basement last week, we unclogged the gutter, ran fans and air purifiers, and eventually wiped or sprayed everything that touched the ground with Basic-G® Concentrated Germicide. In addition to the relief of a dry basement, I also felt safe knowing that I had a non-toxic option instead of having to fight toxins with toxins. Bonus – I now have a better organized basement since I wanted to find a way to get everything possible off the floor :).
