Driver Swerves to Avoid Ducklings on Highway; Two People Hospitalized

A driver told police he swerved to avoid a small group of ducklings crossing the highway.

Two people were hospitalized after a driver swerved to avoid ducklings crossing the highway.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reported a 17-year-old man from Mankato, Minn., told police he swerved to avoid a small group of ducklings crossing Highway 218 just north of Ansborough Avenue in Waterloo around 8 a.m. Saturday.

Police said his sports utility vehicle struck a van driven by Amanda Steege, 27, of Cedar Falls, and pushed it into the cement median. She had to be extricated by rescue personnel and was transported to Covenant Medical Center with incapacitating injuries.

The sports utility vehicle, meanwhile, rolled and landed on its roof. The driver was not injured, but a passenger, Teresa Mendiola-Zamora, 44, of Mankato, was transported to Allen Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Another passenger, Jesus Osorio-Tadeo, 33, of Mankato, received treatment at the scene from paramedics.

Police cited Bolanos for failure to maintain control.

The Courier reported the ducklings were collected and moved from the road.
